Formed in 1993 after members met while detained in a police holding cell, the group released a series of albums in the mid-to-late 1990s and signed to Matador Records in 1997, issuing Pardon My French. They released Conduct (1998) and Cupid's Cactus (2001), maintained a sporadic release schedule through the 2000s, and returned with the album The Band in 2018.
